Jutta Arctic ( Oeneis jutta )

Ottawa, ON  2015/05/24

Member of Family: Nymphalidae

The French common name for this butterfly is apt, as it would not normally stray out of its bog habitat, at least in much of Ontario and Quebec.

Note: Some taxonomists believe that this butterfly is a separate species from the jutta which flies in Eurasia.  Oeneis balderi has been proposed as the latin name for the butterfly which flies here in North America.  This is the designation currently used in eButterfly.  "Balder's Arctic" and "Bog Arctic" are two common names that have been proposed for this species. This new taxonomy is yet to be universally accepted.
